Why do some people need their wisdom teeth (third molars)
removed?
Due to evolution of the human body, our jaw may no longer be large enough to support
the third molars. In some individuals, these teeth may become impacted and can
threaten other teeth.
When should wisdom teeth be removed?
The premium time to have your wisdom teeth removed is around seventeen years of
age, when they first develop. If the removal is performed at an early stage, the
operation will be easier since the roots are not fully formed.
How are the teeth removed?
Usually, wisdom teeth are removed on an outpatient basis. The standard procedure
uses a sedative and an anesthetic. If the teeth have emerged and are not impacted,
they can be removed with forceps. Otherwise, an incision may be necessary to uncover
the tooth.
What are the after-effects of the operation?
Your mouth will likely feel sore for the next few days following the operation.
The tissue will heal within two weeks, but the bone surrounding the tooth site
will not completely permeate for six months.
