What are sealants?
A sealant is a durable plastic coating which is bonded to your teeth to prevent
tooth decay.
Why use sealants?
Your teeth have small pits or fissures which are unable to be cleaned by normal
brushing. Consequently, these fissures are very prone to decay. A sealant provides
an invisible barrier around the fissure, blocking food and bacteria from entering.
When should sealants be utilized?
Sealants should be applied during early childhood before tooth decay has begun.
How are sealants applied?
The procedure to apply sealants is quick and completely painless. First, teeth
are cleaned to remove any bacteria. Next, the teeth are etched to provide a better
bonding surface. Then the sealant is 'brushed on' and dried using a light wand.
